Share Your World – November 27, 2017

Or December 3rd, 2017 🙂 – tomorrow Cee will publish a new one. Anyhooo, here goes…for this week.

Would you prefer a reading nook or an art, craft, photography studio?

A reading nook without a doubt! Like this one.

Tell how you are feeling today in the form of a weather report. (For example, partly cloudy, sunny with a chance for showers, etc.)

Partly cloudy with the sun peeking through.

If you could witness or physically attend any event past, present or future, what would it be?

Nelson Mandela’s first public speech on 11 February 1990, after his release. My friends T & B were there and described the electric energy in the audience. It was not the same watching on TV.

What inspired you or what did you appreciate this past week?

After a year of learnings and deep personal shifts this year, I was glad to be writing my final social entrepreneurship programme exam yesterday. It consumed more energy and time than I expected when I started in January, and at the same time, I feel the pull of this new world I stepped in to. Courage is my word for the immediate future.

I wish you a courageous week ahead!

Share Your World – October 30, 2017

Hello and I’m back this week. I went out of town last week, chasing my dreams. I came away having completed one more step towards that, greater clarity of purpose, and a bunch of new learnings.

For now, it’s time for Cee’s SYW…today’s edition.

Where do you eat breakfast?

The day is not started for Che and me without having coffee and toast in bed. We take turns doing this, and the person making the coffee and toast wakes the other one up.

Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want have an evening with?

The Lonely Island comedy troupe. They’re hilarious, versatile, brilliant writers and producers of good social commentary using the medium of comedy.

If you could be a tree or plant, what would you be?

I’d love to be an Ent! From the Lord of the Rings! They’re patient, serene, powerful, tall, as old as the trees. Oh wait, they are trees…

Good evening friends!

Lately, I’ve barely managed to get one post out a week, sometimes two. Social Entrepreneurship studies are wrapping up and there’s still a fair amount to do, especially with my Action Learning Project. Oh, and 2 assignments are due on Wednesday.

Then there is work and I’ve also been away, both for work and leisure 🙂

I’m grateful to Cee to come up with such amazing challenges which I’m enjoying participating in. In this post, I’m sharing my world and if you like reading such posts, go on to Cee’s site and check out more entries – just click here.

Right, now for the questions and answers.

Was school easy or difficult for you? How so?

I remember it being easy. I was lazy and left things to the last minute, didn’t enjoy homework and didn’t study enough. I could’ve aced all my subjects but I don’t like studying so…

List some of your favorite types of animals.

Cats!

What is your favorite large city you have been to? What is the one thing you remember most?

San Francisco! The Golden Gate bridge without a doubt. I was gobsmacked when I walked on it. I was finally there. I never thought I would ever visit…until I did. So, keep your dreams alive and work towards them. You will surprise yourself, for sure.

I’m going to Cape Town on Thursday to do a talk, and I know I’m going to come back with more Table Mountain pictures.

Until then…have a great week!

Sharing My World – October 2, 2017

The summer rain storms have started, we had 2 today. The smells of a thunderstorm are incredible and the wet earth smell afterward when everything is moist and alive are second to none.

Now, moving on to the reason for this post – Cee’s questions today are most interesting.

If you were given the opportunity to ride in a helicopter would go?

Oh yes, without a doubt! At one stage I considered learning how to fly one and opted out because of the cost. It costs more to learn to fly a helicopter than a small plane. My favourite helicopter is the Screaming Mimi from the 80s TV series Riptide. Do you remember it? My sister, brother and I didn’t miss an episode :-). I was sad when it ended.

What are some of your favorite type of proteins to eat? (meat, seafood, eggs, soy, cheese, nuts)

I eat fish and seafood, mostly when I am out and about because it is easy to get and prevents me from having to eat a carb-heavy meal. Most restaurants cater pasta for non-meat eaters and that is just sad. A friend who was studying to be a chef told me that it just was not worth, financially, catering for vegetarians because there aren’t many compared to non-vegetarians.

When I am in control of my food, I eat vegetarian protein – I love dahl and chickpeas. I’m not a fan of tofu. Incredulously there are still people who think that vegetarians don’t eat protein. I once worked with someone who was convinced that chicken was vegetarian – true story. There is also the story of a fellow toastmaster who looked at me with sad eyes, and in a sad voice asked me, “Why don’t you like meat?” South Africa is a meat country, part of the national culture and cuisine. It is not that I don’t like meat, I choose not to eat it because my body is healthier without eating it. I’m not against people eating meat and have no issue with cooking it for my guests – Che does the tasting for me. I’m going raw vegan for a month to see what that is like and I’m looking forward to shedding some kgs.

What would be your preference, awake before dawn, at dawn, or awake before noon?

Awake before noon is my default although when I have been awake before dawn I have felt amazing.

What inspired you or what did you appreciate this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

I was at GIBS for the final block of lectures of the Social Entrepreneurship programme and my classmates inspire me. There is such a diversity of ideas and businesses amongst us all that if we all implemented them, significant inroads would be made in poverty alleviation in our regions.

Share Your World – September 25, 2017

Sharing my world this week, via Cee’s weekly challenge.

What is your favorite outdoor activity?

Sitting in the sun, feeling the warmth on my skin, listening to the sounds of nature around me, and feeling the grass underneath. Nothing connects me with the earth more than that simple activity. Even better is if the sounds of nature include running water, or  waves crashing on the beach. The feel of sand beneath my feet also brings about a similar feeling of bliss.

In a car would you rather drive or be a passenger?

Without a doubt, the driver. I love driving, especially long distances. Driving fast, yes, I love that!

If you could have three wishes granted for you alone, what would they be?

  1. Everyone in the world to have a job, a roof over their heads, safety and security.
  2. That all children have the basic right of education.
  3. Everyone to do some form of meditation, from prayer to buddhist to transcendental meditation – it matters not, as long as the whole world did it, just once a day.

I know the question said the wishes should be for me alone. Those would mean that (1) my heart wouldn’t break each time I see a vulnerable person begging on the streets, (2) see number 1 and (3) that I could sleep easily knowing that peace reigned in the world.

What inspired you or what did you appreciate this past week?

I enjoyed attending a Toastmasters meeting again with Che. It has been a while since we went, and I appreciated once again what a quality educational program it has. This set me to thinking about my future and what I want to focus on next. Toastmasters has a role to play.

I also loved the first highveld thunderstorm last night. Thunder boomed, the cats took refuge under the table and the garden was greener this morning than yesterday.

Have a wonderful week everyone!
