100 Happy Thoughts – 2020 Edition – The First 20

In 2017 I participated in 100 Happy Thoughts – you can read the original posts here, inspired by Hazel from My Nutty Dubai.

In South Africa, it’s been 100 days of varying stages of Covid lockdown already, give or take a couple of days. I’m going back to March 28 to be exact, 2 days after a restrictive initial and level 5 lockdown began. Some days I remember clearly, and others not so. I’m going back to my calendar and the photos I’ve been taking.

Throughout this time (and still today), I haven’t been with my family, whom I miss terribly. I can’t wait to be with them again.

Like the 2017 edition, I’m going to split them into posts of 20 days each. Enjoy 🙂

Day 1 – Deep-dish pizza for dinner, made by Chè.

Day 2 – Planted spinach, lettuce, and tomatoes.

Day 3 – Chè made delicious fruit chutney, with apricots and peaches. He’s so good at that.

Day 4 – Collaborated with colleagues from the Netherlands to prepare for next week’s virtual training.

Day 5 – More yummy baking by Chè. The whole family is exchanging photos of freshly homemade baked goods 🙂

Day 6 – Nermal the most beautiful Maine Coon cat graced me with his company while I worked.

Day 7 –  It’s Friday! Need I say more? I work longer hours when remote working, so Fridays are still greeted with the usual glee.

Day 8 – Selfies with Nermal the most beautiful Maine Coon cat – he’s such a joy!

Day 9 – Searching for hot cross buns recipes was a mouthwatering experience – Easter is coming!

Day 10 – It’s my first virtual training in collaboration with my colleague in the Netherlands – my first virtual training, and it’s international 🙂

Day 11 – I discovered Urban Foods – an amazing shop where I can get fresh fruit, veggies, meats, and other deli items delivered. Their quality is exceptional and their delivery time fast. This makes me happy.

Day 12 – I did my first outreach Scrum training, and I met some wonderful people.

Day 13 – I’m so enjoying delivering training remotely.

Day 14 – Can I say “It’s Friday again?” Well, it is, AND I found an old box of Barney cupcakes in the back of the cupboard. I’d bought it for when my niece and nephew came to visit, and evidence shows that we didn’t engage in any baking at the time.

Day 15 – I made apple crumble! I’m not a baker but I was inspired to do some. And perhaps all the surplus apples in the fruit bowl did too. Better than having them go all floury because we didn’t eat them on time.

Day 16 – It’s Easter Sunday – without getting together with my family, as we cannot due to level 5 (hard) lockdown 🙁 …I’m grateful to have a safe home to be in, with food in the fridge 🙂

Day 17 – Easter Monday, and a chaotic and wonderful Zoom call with my family! Yay!

Day 18 – More training outreach work! I so enjoy training.

Day 19 – Zoom call with my good friend Katrina, and my sister and niece 🙂

Day 20 – Virtual drinks with my social entrepreneurship group of friends.

These are the first 20 days of happy thoughts. The next 20 follow.

Ciao for now.

100 Happy Thoughts – The Third 20

Here follows the third instalment of 100 happy thoughts (60/100). Click here to read the first 20 and here to read the second 20.

Day 41 – A day where I did some great BizDev!

Day 42 – Spent the day with my sister, niece and brother-in-law. It has been a while and it was awesome visiting them. Had Chinese food for lunch. It was such a warm balmy day. Lovely! On the way home I stopped by Westpack Packaging and got some boxes and plastic containers to begin packing up the kitchen. A new one in its place awaits!

Day 43 – Breakfast with my Folks, brother, nephew and sister-in-law at the Harvard Cafe at the Rand Airport. I love that airport. Eating and watching the activity around the planes on the tarmac. There’s such a feeling of spaciousness because that airport is surrounded by a large open field.

Day 44 – Reading reading reading reading.

Day 45 – I treated myself to a spa half-day! I found one close to home, and the therapist was incredible! I’m going back in a month’s time. I have a full body hot stone massage (the hot stone massages are my favourite), with a facial and pedicure. My skin looked and felt amazing after. I rested for the rest of the day, allowing the relaxation to continue.

Day 46 – Coffee and toast, first thing in the morning with Che – one of my favourite things!

Day 47 – Went to Toastmasters again tonight, after a long absence. Che and I were judges for the Humorous contest. It was great being there, seeing old friends, and seeing how the up and coming speakers are doing. Oh, and I wore high heels for the first time in many months.

Day 48 – I took a few suitcases of clothes, shoes, bags, and linen (plus the suitcases) to Amcare, a non-profit which is doing amazing work in the community. The items are in good shape, nothing ratty or tatty. I have a lot of clothes and I want to minimise, so the ones I don’t see myself wearing again I gave away.

Day 49 – A beautiful weather day. Dinner with our cousins at a new Portuguese restaurant in Glenanda. The food was real down to earth Portuguese cuisine.

Day 50 – Another beautiful weather day. Lunch at Simply Asia with Che.

Day 51 – A public holiday so I veg’d, literally veg’d and it was amazing. Oh, and I read a whole book…well, listened to one on Audible

Day 52 – Chuffed that Social Entrepreneurship programme deals with the lean startup. That’s what’s needed in this space, instead of big design and planning up front.

Day 53 – Fourth and final block of Social Entrepreneurship. It’s been a journey, tough at times with juggling work, life and all other things with assignment deadlines, lectures, and exams. Happy to see my cohorts.

Day 54 – I’m staying in a gorgeous Airbnb close to GIBS and the room is in the middle of a beautiful garden. There’s a pond with running water right outside my door, and I love the sound of running water. The garden smells so nice it being spring and all.

Day 55 – Dinner in Rosebank with 2 of my Social Entrepreneurship colleagues.

Day 56 – I’m back home and loving sleeping in my own bed. It’s always nice sleeping in my own bed. Che and I caught up on the hilarious Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Day 57 – Che and I went food shopping – bliss! I’ve decided to go the raw vegan route for a month so I stocked up on veggies and fruit. Sunday lunch, just the 2 of us at Calisto’s

Day 58 – Rest and relaxation.

Day 59 – It rained today, the first thundershowers of the season.

Day 60 – Planning with a new client.

Come back tomorrow for the fourth instalment of this 100 happy days series.

100 Happy Thoughts – The Second 20

Here follows the second instalment of 100 happy thoughts (40/100). Click here to read the first 20.

Day 21 – Watery sunlight and I got to indulge in blogging again, the last post was Elemental 2 weeks ago! My stats have dropped quite a bit. I came across The Game Of Thrones Musical by Chris Martin from Coldplay – hilarious! I especially love Jon Snow’s…well…Kit Harrington’s serenade of Ygritte…well…Rose Leslie, called Wildling to the tune of The Trogg’s WildThing. Here is the short version.

Day 22 – Homemade seafood pizza for dinner – yum!

Day 23 – Arrival in Durban for 3 days – work trip, but I booked a place on the beach in Umhlanga so at least I can see and hear the waves crashing on the beach. I just love this sound, it grounds me so much!

Day 24 – Tough and rewarding day training an amazing bunch of people. Afterwards, I went to Gateway Shopping Centre to get a pair of shoes because the wedge boots I bought made my feet quite sore standing the whole day and all. I’ve always wanted a metallic pair of sneakers. The gold ones just seemed so LOUD, so I chose a Woolies Studio W silver pair instead. I’m looking forward to wearing them tomorrow, and showing off, of course! 😉

Day 25 – Silver sneaker day!

Day 26 – Had a great day connecting with awesome people at an awesome company in Durban. They have a solar farm, how awesome is that! And they are a very welcoming bunch of people. And I’m flying home tonight – yay!

Day 27 – Home today, yay! Spring day, the 1st of September where I spent the whole day in a short sleeved t-shirt.

Day 28 – Che and I are spending the night at my folks, and looking forward to some quality time with them. I bought my Mom these gorgeous roses.

Day 29 – Family lunch! The trees are budding and I dusted off my DSLR and took some close up pics. I really must get into my photography once again. I take pics with my iPhone most of the time, and it’s such an easy travel camera. But I do miss the DSLR and I’ve decided to rediscover it once again. Che and I have been binge watching Downton Abbey for a few weeks now. We’re in season 5 and we’ve just finished watching episode 9 where Rose gets married and Anna arrested. Gosh! Since it’s Sunday night and despite it being a ‘school day’ tomorrow, we binge watched some more this evening!

Day 30 – What a lovely warm spring day! That makes me happy.

Day 31 – Another lovely warm spring day. Che and I went out for lunch and I popped into the hairdresser for a quick fringe cut.

Day 32 – Arrived in Cape Town for coach camp.

Day 33 – ZA coach camp, and dinner with my colleagues at The Food Barn in Noordhoek. Sharing tapas and the best gin & tonic I’ve had in a long time – you can’t beat South African Inverroche gin distilled with fynbos. It was a noisy affair with lots of hilarity – you know when you laugh so much that tears come to your eyes? Yes, like that 🙂 …and the gin…

Day 34 – Flew home to Jhb and slept in my own bed. It was good.

Day 35 – Had a long-awaited dinner with our neighbours at Aldeia Portuguese restaurant. What a delightful evening. And to top it all it was glorious hot weather – i.e. short sleeves weather!

Day 36 – I finally managed to begin decluttering my clothes, shoes and general household linen. It’s all going to charity. I’m keeping what I really use and as for the linen, I have so many duvet sets that I really don’t use. I’m hoping a poor family will make good use of it.

Day 37 – A lovely and hot spring day.

Day 38 – Another lovely and hot spring day.

Day 39 – My workspace today was Motherland coffee with my colleague M with great coffee and cool vibes playing in the background. My ideal workspace.

Day 40 – Worked from home.

100 Happy Thoughts – The First 20

Hazel from My Nutty Dubai did a really great post a few months ago on how she brought a focus on things that bring her happiness into her life. You can read about it here. I thought this was such a great idea for me to do that I started compiling it on that day – Sunday, August 6, 2017.

It has been a year of challenges and learnings and I also needed to focus on the things that brought me happiness each day.

Because this is a humongous read, I’m splitting it into 5 separate posts, each with 20 entries.

So here are my first 20 of 100 happy thoughts 🙂

Day 1 (6 August 2017) – Coming across Hazel’s 100 Happy Thoughts page and starting this post.

Day 2 – I finished my input on the HR syndicate group assignment, now I can focus on my individual assignment. Both are for the same day (16 August).

Day 3 – Watching Downton Abbey with Che – we managed 3 episodes.

Day 4 (9 August 2017) – Women’s Day in South Africa, hence a public holiday. I read read read.

Day 5 – I can smell spring in the air, it was warm and the wind was not cold.

Day 6  – My favourite lunch of sushi and cappuccino.

Day 7 – Food shopping with Che, I love our routine – first lunch, then the food market, followed by a cappuccino at our favourite coffee shop 🙂

Day 8 – Reading reading reading. I haven’t read much that isn’t related to my Social Entrepreneurship Programme. I sat in the sun reading for the better part of the day, and it was bliss. I almost finished the book but left some for enjoyment during the next week.

Day 9 – Had my Action Learning Project feedback session. Even though I am behind on this project I learned a lot from the feedback.

Day 10 – I had the honour of coaching 3 wonderful speakers for the Agile Africa conference.

Day 11 – Day of speaker coaching – amazing talks and I’m looking forward to seeing them deliver them next week. Also saw a friend I hadn’t seen in a few years.

Day 12 – Returned home after being away for 2 days training. It was great to come back to the love and warmth of home.

Day 13 – I finished my assignment. Now I can enjoy the weekend and get back to things like blogging.

Day 14 – Vegging out in the sun. Che and I also went to the food lovers market and bought yummy ingredients for yummy dishes.

Day 15 – Agile Africa speakers dinner. Wonderful to meet old friends and make new ones.

Day 16 – Day 1 of Agile Africa – I MC’d the main ballroom and got to hear some great talks by new up and coming speakers.

Day 17 – Day 2 of Agile Africa where a new friend and I are concocting an exciting new project. We’re going to connect again in 2 weeks time. Watch this space!

Day 18 – I am home again, sleeping in my own bed, and got to have the first real cup of coffee since Sunday, bliss!

Day 19 – I had my hair done.

Day 20 – Friday it’s Fri-daay! Downton Abbey in the evening.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this first instalment of 100 happy thoughts. Come back tomorrow for the second one.
