Weekend Coffee Share: The New Year 2021 Edition

Welcome to the first coffee of 2021. Come on in and grab whatever you want. There’s no cake (we ate it all) but you can grab some cookies lovingly made by my niece. They’re really good and yummy 🙂

Nothing much has happened since our last coffee date. The week between Christmas and New Year is usually a quiet one and this year it was no different. It went by rather fast and before I knew it, it was the 31st. We decided to spend New Year’s Eve alone at home so it became an evening just like any other. Which is totally ok with us. We don’t go out partying on New Year’s eve anyway. What we did miss out on was staying over at my folks’ house – but we got together as a family on New Year’s Day.

It turned out to be that I was the braai master; I’ve never braaied before (I’ve been the happy beneficiary of such many times before), so this was something new to start the year off with. A new skill learned on the first day of the new year – and the meat turned out ok. It was a hot day so we landed up in the pool playing piggy-in-the-middle.

This is the time of the year that I lose track of what day of the week it is. I think I may have mentioned it last week as well. But not this year because this year every week has been like that, the days just blending into each other. I read, blogged, ate, and did not do any rebounding at all.

I’m working on my year in a review series. I’m up to June. January started off nice and exciting; February too. And June is as bland as the winter landscape in the highveld.

I discovered some wonderful YouTube channels which I’ve been watching:

The Chateau Diaries – a vlog about chateau life, following the adventures of the people who live there. The personalities are so compelling, there is humour and they look like they’re having so much fun! Oh yes … it makes me want to buy a chateau in France.

Il Rifugio Perfetto (The Perfect Refuge) – a cooking and lifestyle channel with amazing simple recipes. I can’t wait for each day’s video. The format is so simple and I love the real-life noises of cutting, chopping and onion frying. There is no talking because the actions speak for themselves. It’s sub-titled and the recipe is detailed in the description box below each video. It is wonderful Mediterranean cooking.

I finished reading Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods and it was hilarious – there were times that I had tears running down my face from all the laughing – and today I started reading Barak Obama’s new book A Promised Land.

And on a final note, look at our tomatoes – it looks like we’re going to have a good yield this summer :).

  1. the week between Christmas and New Year usually just breezes past in blur…
    Being a braai master is surprisingly easy (or maybe its easy to some people) just make sure it doesn’t burn and having spices and marinade just kicks it up a gear

    1. I wanted to sprinkle beer over the meat but with the booze ban we didn’t have any. So it was lemon-paprika basting. It got me interested in experimenting with different ways of making the meat tender and yummy.
