Weekend Coffee Share: Hot Summer Edition (The First Of Many!)

If we were having coffee it would be at Olympia Cafe and Deli in Kalk Bay. It’s my go-to place when I’m down here. It’s an eccentric down-to-earth place. Most importantly, the coffee is sublime! So that’s where we’re meeting. I know you’ll like it.

I’m down here in Cape Town until Thursday, for our end of year coach retreat and Christmas party. I’ll also be coaching at a client from Tuesday until Thursday next week. At the risk of overusing adverbs, the weather is absolutely amazing. Beach weather. I got nicely (not!) sunburnt yesterday just walking in the street. At 10h30 this morning the sun was already strong, stinging my sunburnt arms.

I took a fairly long walk yesterday and took scores of photos. I completed 10,000 steps and 13 flights of stairs. All of this unusual exertion is due to the my new toy – a Fitbit Charge HR. I’m taking charge of my fitness levels and this little device has been magical. I’ve been taken by surprise at how my behaviour has changed in the few short days I’ve been wearing it. I’m optimising for exercising and getting fit.

I love checking my heart rate after doing certain types of activities. The silent vibrating alarm is pretty cool although it did startle me when it started to vibrate kind of defeating the purpose of the gentle waking up it promises.

It also vibrates when I reach my 10,000 steps milestone – this is one vibration that is most welcome.

Now, about the 13 flights of stairs – I didn’t actually climb 13 flights of stairs – only about 2 or 3. The narrow streets of Kalk Bay are so steep as they cling to the mountain that Fitbit detects those as stairs. Very cool I think!

If we were having coffee we’d solve the mystery of whether seals snore or not. This big guy was oblivious to the curious onlookers and carried on sunning himself or maybe he was snoozing because I swear I heard him snore. Do seals snore, do you know? Introducing the sunning, sleeping, snoring seal…

If we were having coffee we’d talk about how summer brings along  its own unique palette of colours, especially at the coast as you can see by the gorgeous fishing boat below.

If we were having coffee we’d talk about how there was a time when I couldn’t resist souvenir vendors, like the ones at The Harbour House. Now having photos of places I visit are the only souvenirs I want. I don’t have much space in my house for extra things anyway.

If we were having coffee we’d take a walk through the main road and browse all the interesting shops. Hmmm…let’s take a walk to the ice cream shop, I feel like a cone now.

PS: I can’t wait for Star Wars!
