Microblog Mondays 44: Where I am Contemplating a Move to Mars

So now I must stay away from wheat, gluten, dairy, sugar and…coffee. I also should stay away from cats, grass and dust.

That means no:

  1. Bread – I am Portuguese!! It is a staple…
  2. Dairy – I am Portuguese…no mozarella and fresh mountain cheese…?
  3. Sugar – I am Portuguese…no pasteis de nata?
  4. Coffee – I am Portuguese…’nough said…

That also means no wine. I love cats and lying on the grass. Life without dust I can live with.

This all means that I have to stay away from some of things that give me pleasure. Given that I am vegetarian already, I may as well eat the cardboard the food is packaged in and move to Mars where there are no cats or dust. And food probably comes in tubes.

  1. My brother in law is a celiac. Thirty years on he takes it in his stride. A visit to my sisters house is always novel. For she has a family that all require a different dietary need. I shall be visiting next month, so now she can add vegetarian to the list also.

I’m not sure where you live? My point being, that most large grocery retailers have sections for people with different needs. Bread might be the only one that you will have a problem with? At first my sister used to find different substitutes for loaves of bread. Instead he just doesn’t have bread. For really the yeast requires gluten to properly rise. Most of his substitutes come in the form of rice. Rice flour, noodles, etc. That and potatoes. He consumes a lot of chips, potato and corn. Corn makes an okay pasta too. Ever tried polenta? Once the polenta is cooled after cooking, It is very bread like. Polenta can be used in so many ways. Milk could be from almonds, rice or soy. Women should be cautious of unfermented soy. For it interferes with estrogen levels. Fermented soy like tofu or tamari should be okay. I like to cook, so a visit with Valerie, is not usually problematic. Cheers Jamie.

    1. Thank you for all the recommendations especially about the soy! I miss bread the most and eat mostly rice cakes. Almonds have become my staple snack food and I make sure to always have some in my bag. I live in South Africa and sometimes the variety of foods I can eat is not always available. It is certainly interesting times. Thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment.

  2. It will be great to follow how terrific you feel as this becomes a habit! I am with you on the almonds, they are the best thing to beat sugar craving with. Wishing you lots of success with this plan.

  3. Whoa, that is a severe list of no-can-haves. I hope that it makes you feel better and the end result is worth the deprivation! I have so many gluten free recommendations as a celiac, but they all pretty much involve sugar and/or dairy, so no go. I think Whole 30 is based on no sugar and no gluten/grains (but may have dairy), but that may be a good source of recipes that don’t make you want to deaden your taste buds. Good luck to you!

    1. It feels pretty bleak. When I want a snack, I go to the fridge or cupboard and pretty much everything has either sugar or is wheat based. Thanks for the recommendation, I’m going to look into it.

  4. Regina that is pretty hard,I can never begin to imagine what life can be like with all those restrictions.Having said that if it means your life will be healthier it is worth giving up some of things you are used to. I hope you reap the benefits.

    1. The benefits will be good ones. I just need to get used to it, experts say it takes 21 days for new habits to form. I have been eating a lot of almonds which I enjoy as a snack. I appreciate your words of encouragement, thank you.

    1. That is the recommendation, a change to what I eat will have a positive impact on my health. The cost-benefit ratio makes it worth it to just grit my teeth, initially at first, and eventually get used to it. Coffee I don’t think I can give up (the other items like wheat, gluten and sugar are worse culprits) but I already have 2 cups (not mugs) of coffee daily with no sugar, so that must count for something .
