A to Z Challenge – Lessons from Behind the Lectern

I missed the Blogging from A to Z Challenge theme reveal last week so this post (which was supposed to have been posted yesterday) is late in more ways than one.

I have no excuses for last week’s theme reveal. For this week I have a good reason – I have been on holiday with patchy internet access and blogging fell by the wayside.

I am now home and I am pleased to let you know that the theme of my A to Z Challenge is…

Lessons from Behind the Lectern.

Do you know what people fear more than death? Yes…speaking in public! And yet it is one of the things that most people are expected to do daily as part of their jobs.

For the past 18 years I have spent a lot of my time learning and becoming better at speaking in front of an audience. It is a passion of mine and I love it!

When I am in front of an audience I go into a zone where I feel outside of myself. I become unaware of time passing. Things like nerves and fear of forgetting what to say disappear. That is the adrenalin working FOR me. At the end of it all I feel energised, like stepping off a roller-coaster ride, and when I speak at night, it takes a good lavender soak in a hot bath to be able to fall asleep, I am so hyped up – in a good way.

The skills and techniques to speak in front of large and small audience are the same. One may feel a bit more intimidated in front of 500 people, but the way to approach it is the same as speaking in front of say, 5 people.

Over the next 30 days I will dig into my store of personal experiences and stories for each topic.

You can expect information, stories and tips on dealing with nerves, how to structure talks, speeches and presentations, what to do with your hands and how to deal with an unruly audience. And much more.

With this series I am hoping to share my passion. With this series I want to stimulate discussion and questions. With this series I want to learn some more, because so often it is in sharing something that one learns more about it.

I hope you will come back tomorrow and all the days after that.
